When We Add Moxibustion to a Treatment

When We Add Moxibustion to a Treatment

If your practitioner has mentioned moxibustion, or you have seen the smoky herb sticks in a TCM clinic and wondered what they are, here is a plain explanation of what moxibustion is and when we use it.

What moxibustion is

Moxibustion involves burning a processed herb called mugwort (Artemisia argyi) near the skin to gently warm specific acupuncture points. Within Traditional Chinese Medicine, its purpose is to stimulate circulation, dispel what TCM calls cold and dampness, and support the smooth flow of Qi and blood. It is often used alongside acupuncture rather than on its own, and you can read more on our moxibustion therapy page.

When we tend to add it

It is also something we consider as part of acupuncture for IVF support, where warming can help support circulation through a treatment cycle. As with everything else, it is chosen for your presentation, not applied to everyone.

The safety points we work to

We are upfront about safety. Moxibustion carries a small risk of minor burns and produces some smoke and odour, which is why we use smokeless moxa or proper ventilation where appropriate. It is not suitable for use over areas with reduced sensation (for example with neuropathy), over broken skin, or for some people with certain respiratory conditions such as severe asthma. Your practitioner will check for these before using it.

A note on pregnancy and breech presentation

You may have read that moxibustion is used in late pregnancy for breech presentation. Traditionally, TCM has used moxibustion at a point called BL67 to support maternal health, and some studies suggest it may encourage fetal movement. If this interests you, it should only be considered as an adjunctive option, and only with the knowledge and consent of your primary prenatal care provider, such as your midwife or obstetrician. We do not promise that it will turn a breech baby or prevent a caesarean, and any decision belongs with your maternity team.
