Frequently asked questions
At Herbsmeta Clinic, we believe that understanding your health journey is the first step toward healing. Whether you're new to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or seeking a new practitioner, we're here to provide clarity and support. Below, you'll find answers to our most frequently asked questions. If you don't see what you're looking for, please don't hesitate to contact us.
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and how does it work?
TCM is a comprehensive medical system that has been developed over thousands of years. It views the body as an integrated whole and focuses on balancing the body's vital energy, or "Qi" (pronounced "chee"). When Qi flows smoothly through the body's meridians (energy pathways), we experience health. Illness arises from imbalances or blockages in this flow. TCM uses natural methods to restore balance and support the body's innate ability to heal itself.
How is TCM different from Western medicine?
While Western medicine often focuses on treating specific symptoms or diseases, TCM takes a holistic approach. We look at the root cause of your symptoms by considering your entire physical, mental, and emotional state. Think of it this way: if you have a headache, Western medicine might provide a pain reliever, while TCM would seek to understand why you're getting headaches (e.g., stress, diet, liver imbalance) and create a treatment plan to address that underlying cause.
Is TCM scientific? Is there evidence it works?
Yes. Many principles and treatments of TCM are supported by a growing body of modern scientific research. Acupuncture, for example, is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for its efficacy in treating dozens of conditions. The key is that TCM operates on a different model of physiology (Qi, meridians) that is now being explored and validated through the lens of neuroscience, immunology, and other fields.
What can I expect during my first TCM consultation?
Your first visit is a comprehensive assessment that typically lasts 60-75 minutes. We will discuss your main health concerns, medical history, diet, sleep, and emotional well-being. The practitioner will also use TCM's unique diagnostic methods: examining your tongue coating and color, and feeling your pulse on both wrists. This in-depth evaluation allows us to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Please check in 10-15 minutes prior to the appointment to fill out an online intake form and consent.
Do I need to prepare for my appointments?
For the most accurate diagnosis, we recommend:
· Avoid drinking coffee or other colored beverages that might stain your tongue.
· Eat a light meal a few hours before your appointment (don't come on a completely empty stomach).
· Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
Bring any relevant medical reports or a list of current medications.
Does acupuncture hurt?
The sensation is very different from a hypodermic needle. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin and solid. Most people feel only a slight pinch upon insertion, followed by a vague sensation of heaviness, tingling, or warmth around the needle. The experience is generally very relaxing, and many patients even fall asleep during treatment.
Are the herbal products you prescribe safe? What about heavy metals?
Patient safety is our top priority. At Herbs Meta we use only Herbal granules and patent pills, which are sourced only from reputable, GMP-certified suppliers.
We also believe in full transparency. Everyone's constitution is different, and herbs, like any active substance, can affect people differently. There is always a potential for side effects. Open communication about your health history is essential for us to prescribe the safest and most effective formula for your specific needs.
What conditions can TCM effectively treat?
TCM is known for treating a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:
· Pain and Stress: Headaches, migraines, neck/shoulder/back pain, arthritis, sciatica, and stress.
· Sleep and Energy: Insomnia, anxiety, depression, mental/emotional.
· Women's Health: Menstrual irregularities, PMS, fertility support, menopausal symptoms.
· Digestive Issues: IBS, bloating, constipation, indigestion.
· Respiratory: Allergies, asthma, frequent colds, cough.
· Paediatric health : Digestion and growth etc.
· Chronic Fatigue & Immune Support
· Many other conditions.
How many treatments will I need?
This depends entirely on your individual condition. Acute issues may see significant improvement in just a few sessions. Chronic conditions that have developed over years often require a longer course of treatment to achieve lasting results. After your initial consultation, your practitioner will propose a treatment plan with a clear estimate.
Do you direct bill to insurance?
Many extended health insurance plans now cover TCM services such as acupuncture and herbal consultations. We provide detailed receipts that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement. Please check with your insurance company to understand the specific coverage under your plan.
What is your cancellation policy?
We require 24 hours notice for appointment cancellations or rescheduling. This allows us to offer the time to another patient in need. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice may be subject to a cancellation fee.
