Acupuncture for Migraines in Richmond Hill
If you live with migraines, you already know the cost: lost days, cancelled plans, and the constant management of triggers. Acupuncture is one of the better-supported complementary options for reducing how often migraines occur.
What the evidence shows
Clinical reviews show that acupuncture can meaningfully reduce the frequency, duration, and intensity of episodic migraines and tension headaches, and it is recognized as an effective preventive, or prophylactic, option. It is used to reduce how often attacks happen, alongside the care your physician provides.
When a headache is an emergency
One important caution: a sudden, severe, or unlike-anything-before headache, sometimes called a thunderclap headache, needs immediate emergency medical assessment, not acupuncture. Acupuncture is for ongoing migraine and headache management, not for an acute emergency. It also works alongside your existing care and does not replace your rescue or preventive medications, so please do not change a prescription without your doctor.
What to expect
Your first visit assesses your headache history, your patterns, and your triggers. Treatment is typically a course of sessions aimed at prevention, reassessed over time.
Cost and coverage
A first visit is a 75 minute initial treatment at $150, with 60 minute standard treatments at $125 after that. Acupuncture from a registered acupuncturist is not covered by OHIP, but to claim under your plan's acupuncture benefit, most insurers require a CTCMPAO-registered R.Ac or R.TCMP, as all of ours are. We direct bill most major insurers through TELUS Health eClaims, so where your plan allows it, you pay only your share at the visit.

He completed an intensive two-year Western Medicine to TCM program at Beijing Xiyuan Hospital and graduated from the Ontario College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (OCTCM).
