Acupuncture for Vertigo in Richmond Hill
Vertigo, the sense that you or the room is spinning, is disorienting and sometimes frightening. Before considering acupuncture, the most important step is making sure you know what is causing it.
Get a diagnosis first
Vertigo has many causes, some of which need specific medical treatment. A proper medical diagnosis should come first to rule out central neurological causes. Some common forms, such as BPPV, are best treated with specific repositioning manoeuvres, like the Epley manoeuvre, rather than acupuncture. We will always encourage appropriate medical assessment before treatment.
What the evidence shows
The evidence for acupuncture in vertigo is limited. Where it may help is with the secondary neck muscle tension that can accompany cervical vertigo, or with easing the stress and nausea associated with some peripheral vestibular issues. It is a supportive option, not a primary treatment.
What to expect
Your first visit is a careful assessment and a frank conversation about whether acupuncture is appropriate for your situation, and we will tell you plainly if it is not. Registered TCM practitioners carry out the assessment.
Cost and coverage
A first visit is a 75 minute initial treatment at $150, with 60 minute standard treatments at $125 after that. Acupuncture from a registered acupuncturist is not covered by OHIP, but to claim under your plan's acupuncture benefit, most insurers require a CTCMPAO-registered R.Ac or R.TCMP, as all of ours are. We direct bill most major insurers through TELUS Health eClaims, so where your plan allows it, you pay only your share at the visit.
